What 1,031 LinkedIn Job Listings Were Hiding

I’ve always been a fan of keeping an eye on the job market, not because I am interested in another job, but because of the data that is available.
I am able to see what skills, experiences are required for certain roles, certain companies and even how it differs from industry to industry.
If you start to monitor this over a period of time, then it provides an interesting assessment of job market trends.
Another use case which interests me more is around personal development, using this information to be able to ensure I am gaining the experiences I require to stay competitive in the market as well as grow into the roles that I may one day be interested in.
So, since early June I’ve been monitoring LinkedIn Jobs, I’ve seen a total of 1,031 listings across 579 companies, this is solely across engineering related leadership roles in AI, Software or generically Engineering.
The titles span Head of Engineering, Engineering Director and CTO, alongside product engineering, reliability, machine learning and broader technology leadership.
What is most interesting and something that we all know, the responsibilities often vary title to title and similar titles often describe different jobs. This makes it really hard to compare a head of engineering at one company to another.
Hybrid appears twice as often as remote
Out of the over 1,000 listings, 509 had a working pattern specified. 313 hybrid, 155 remote and 41 onsite. Appreciate that’s not a very large dataset but interesting nonetheless, to think that hybrid appears twice as much as remote, which aligns with what we are seeing since COVID with more companies mandating office attendance.
The remaining 522 jobs were ones which had no location specified or just had a location, I didn’t want to assume that these were onsite so excluded them from the dataset.
I’ve intentionally not covered salary data in this blog due to there being a poor representative across all jobs, however not ruled out writing about this again once I’ve been able to gather more data.
